Leone - air of high Italian fashion in martial arts

Brands

As far back as I can remember, Milan had always been recognized as a fashion capital.

Even just saying the name of the city out loud makes one think of affluent, elegant bankers dressed in tailored suits and custom-made leather shoes, extravagant fashion shows where skinny models makes with the rich elite, members of such families as Armani, Gabbana and Moschino. But there is so much more to this rich northern Italian city. Not many people would know that it is also the birthplace of one of the world’s leading fight sports brands- Leone.

The never ending story

Character, passion, and determination are key elements of the brand’s incredible success. The company first established its operations in March 1947. In that time, in war ravaged Italy, simply surviving was already a difficult task, and establishing a successful textile company would seem like a pipe dream. But tough times make tough people. Orlando Leone decided to utilise his many year experience in making leather ware, and established his first leather sporting goods factory, christened Leone 1947.

Orlando Leone loved boxing, and his passion for pugilism led him to focus on manufacturing specialised fighting gear, that could soon be seen on the hands of most prominent Italian boxers. After establishing a foothold in his home country, he went on to conquer the rest of European and American rings and boxing gyms. Though Leone- the company- was inspired by the free spirit of its founder, it was never attempting to avoid new challenges. And so, they observed a knockout, and expanded their production into the new holding disciplines-kickboxing, Muay Thai, Savate, MMA and others.

Last decade was spent on expanding to smaller markets in Central and Eastern Europe, and fortifying its position as the leading Italian fighting gear brand. Leone signed top fighters from all over the world Giorgio and Armen Petrosyan, Gago Drago, Artur Kyshenko, Alessio Sakara, Sak Kaoponlek, Chingiz Allazov, Yuri Bessmertny, Mathias Gallo Cassarino, Lena Ovchynnikova. In the recent years they established Leone Team in Poland and signed such fighters as Michał Materla, Marcin Różalski, Radosław Paczuski or Piotr Strus (some of them have since then changed the sponsor).

Beyond the regular fight/boxing gear, Leone is an important supplier of general sporting goods, sportswear, casual wear. To ensure highest quality, all year is designed in Italy with help from professional fighters. The goal is to make products that will emanate the energy and passion that the company’s founder had for boxing. It is thanks to that that the Leone gear can be seen around the world in the gyms, on wresting mats and boxing rings. The company’s motto: we are combat sports, perfectly encompasses that unique passion that its owner, as well as his designers, have for their work

And since we are speaking of owners- let us say something about the famous Leone family. The company is now managed by the third generation. There are entrusted with maintaining and improving product quality, while keeping the almost century long traditions. Introducing technological innovations, modernising operations and designs without forgetting their roots- that is certainly not an easy task, but it appears that the current owners are standing up to it. By introducing the Leone 1947 product line, they made it clear that they are ready and willing to embrace their history.
