How to choose the best boxing gloves

Tips

For an amateur boxer who’s only making their first steps in the ring, the task of choosing proper equipment might seem a little overwhelming. Worry not- here is our guide to choosing right boxing gloves.

How to start

there are hundreds of brands, product models with different designs and parameters, with borrowing quality prices and made of different material (synthetic or natural leather). Choosing the right pair of boxing gloves is without a doubt one of the most important steps when entering the world of fight sports. They will impact the comfort of your training, allow you to exercise longer and most importantly protect your hands and arms from injuries.

How to choose the right size of boxing gloves

the most important step is choosing the right size of your gloves. There are size or rather the weight is given in ounces (oz.). Most popular are 10, 12, 14, 16 ounce. Size 10 owls gloves are often preferred for training on the punching bag pads while sizes 1416 and 18 are more likely to be used during sparring sessions seeing as how they allow you to prefer protect your face better and minimise the danger of a knockout. In professional fights however a knockout is often the preferred outcome, and so gloves weighing £10 will be more common. The weight of your mitts is determined by the amount of padding inside the glove-the more padding the heavier the globe will be in similarly the better it will protect your hands up and your opponents face from injuries. Most amateurs will choose larger sizes due to the offered comfort and safety. The exact size depends on your total body weight as well as your purpose i.e. how you will be using the gloves. There is no clear distinction between male and female gloves although most producers offer gloves in what they consider the more girly design.

It is important that the gloves hold tight to your hands. It is best to try them on with the bandages that hand wraps already on your fists. Properly fitting equipment should be tight enough to touch your hand wraps but not so tight that it would limit your ability to curl your fists.

What is the best equipment for beginners?

As mentioned before it all depends on how you will be using the gloves. Professionals will normally have few different pairs they will switch between trainings, sparring sessions and fights. However, as a beginner you will probably do just fine with only one pair. Here’s go a quick walkthrough for different types:

Universal/training gloves: multifunctional gloves used for different activities. Most likely the best choice for a beginner. Universal boxing gloves will suit you well for working in pairs, with a punching bag, and sparring sessions. These type of gloves can be used in different disciplines, like muay thai, kickboxing or sanda.

Boxing bag gloves

Good for practicing at home and on your own, less useful if you’re planning on doing some sparring. Since they are designed specifically to withstand punches against heavy and tough punching bags, they will typically have more protective padding inside.

What to consider

Most important parameters are always weight and size. Try out different types of gloves (preferably in sizes 12, 14 or 16) and choose whichever one feels good on your hands (make sure your hand fits in even with the hand wraps on and that you can clench your fist easily). Just like with shoes, the gloves will also need some time to adjust.

There is no need to choose expensive professional gloves right at the start- you might not even notice the difference. We recommend that you start with something more basic and relatively inexpensive, keep gaining experience and only reach for the professional gear once you learn something more about your technique and your personal requirements.

Velcro or laces?

Laces provide better wrist support and will fit better in your hand but are completely impractical on the regular training. They take much longer to put on and take off, and you won’t be able to tie them up yourself and will have to rely on your coach to help you. At an amateur level they are simply not worth the trouble. Velcro gloves will do the job just as fine and can be put on in seconds and without anyone’s help.

Synthetic or natural leather

The most common material used for making boxing gloves are cowhide and synthetic leather. This is an important choice seeing as the material used for the gloves will have an impact on the users comfort, durability as well as the final price of the product.

Synthetic gloves tend to be cheaper, within the range of 35 to 70 euro. Because of that they are more often chosen by beginners. However, if you are planning to train more regularly (and are not burdened with any moral qualms), then natural leather would probably be a better choice. Naturally, genuine leather will be more expensive, but also worth the additional cost. Aside from the material resilience and durability natural leather gloves will also be more fit for your hands.

Until recently the choice was limited to few brands. This is no longer the case, and our shop has a wide variety of models brands and types on offer. We would like to hereby recommend you several types of boxing gloves that we see as best choice for beginners.
